چکیده

A previous analysis of the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI ) observation of GRB 021206 found that the gamma-ray flux was 80±20% polarized. We have re-examined this data, and we detect no signal which can be interpreted as due to polarization for GRB 021206. First, we find the number of scattering events capable of measuring polarization, due to a photon scattered from one detector to another with a count produced in both, is considerably lower than previously estimated, by a factor of ≈10 (830±150, vs. 9840±96). Nonetheless, we develop a polarization detection analysis limited in sensitivity only by Poisson noise, and which does not require a space-craft mass model to produce the simulated un-polarized lightcurve as in the previous analysis. We find no signal which might be interpreted as due to polarization in GRB 021206. The non-detection of a polarization signal is at variance with the previous analysis of Coburn and Boggs (2003). While we do not determine the cause of this discrepancy, we suggest it may be due to uncertainties related to using the mass model to estimate the zero-polarization (“null”) lightcurve. We also describe how a particular filtering of the data produces a signal which might be interpreted as due to polarization, but is actually due to detector-related effects.

The Most Probable Cause for the High Gamma-ray Polarization in Grb 021206 Jonathan Granot

The exciting detection of a very high degree of linear polarization, P = 80%±20%, in the prompt γ-ray emission of the recent GRB 021206, provides strong evidence that synchrotron emission is the dominant radiation mechanism. Besides this immediate implication, there were also claims that this implies a magnetic field that is ordered on large scales within the ejecta, and must therefore be produ...

Compton drag as a mechanism for very high linear polarization in Gamma-Ray Bursts

The recent discovery of a very high degree of linear polarization in the prompt emission of GRB 021206 (Coburn & Boggs 2003) has suggested that synchrotron emission may play a dominant role in the production of the prompt γ-ray photons. We here show that, under certain geometrical conditions, an even higher level of linear polarization is expected if the photons are produced by bulk inverse Com...

Radio Flares and the Magnetic Field Structure in Grb Outflows

The magnetic field structure in gamma-ray burst (GRB) outflows is of great interest as it can provide valuable clues that might help pin down the mechanism responsible for the acceleration and collimation of GRB jets. The most promising way of probing this magnetic field structure is through polarization measurements of the synchrotron emission from the GRB ejecta, which includes the prompt γ-r...

On the Polarization of Gamma Ray Bursts and their Optical Afterglows

The polarization of the optical afterglow (AG) of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) has only been measured in a few instances at various times after the GRB. In all cases except the best measured one (GRB 030329) the observed polarization and its evolution are simple and easy to explain in the most naive version of the “Cannonball” model of GRBs: the “intrinsic” AG polarization is small and the observati...
